Séisme de 1906 à San Francisco

Peu après 5h00 du matin, le 18 avril 1906, un tremblement de terre eut lieu sur la côte de la Californie. Il dura près d’une minute.

Des incendies se sont déclenchés et dispersés dans toute la ville. L’approvisionnement en eau a été perturbé et les incendies ont duré plusieurs jours.

Le nombre de victime demeure inconnu, mais est estimé à plus de trois mille décès.

Près de quatre-vingts pour cent de la ville de San Francisco ont été détruits.

The 1906 San Francisco Earthquake

Shortly after 5:00 in the morning on April 18, 1906, an earthquake struck the coast of California.  It lasted about a minute.

Fires broke out and spread across the city. The water supply was disrupted, and the fires burned for days.

The exact death toll is unknown, but it is estimated more than three thousand people died.

Almost eighty percent of San Francisco was destroyed.

Helen Keller est née en 1880, dans la ville de Tuscumbia, en Alabama. À l’âge de dix-neuf mois, elle tomba malade avec une forte fièvre. Une fois la fièvre tombée, Helen était devenue sourde et aveugle.  

Lorsque Helen avait six ans, un professeur, Annie Sullivan, venait chez elle pour l’aider. Helen apprit à utiliser le Braille, un système de lecture et d’écriture pour les personnes aveugles.

Helen a écrit de nombreux livres, et a voyagé tout autour du monde en tant qu’oratrice. Elle mourut dans son sommeil en juin 1968. 

Helen Keller was born in 1880 in Alabama. When she was nineteen months old, she became sick with a high fever. After the fever passed, Helen was deaf and blind.

When Helen was six years old, a teacher came to her house to help her: Annie Sullivan. Helen learned to use Braille, a system of reading and writing for blind people.

Helen wrote many books, and traveled all over the world as a public speaker. She died in her sleep in June of 1968.

Thomas Edison war ein US-amerikanischer Erfinder. 

Er wurde in Ohio im Jahre 1847 geboren. Er erfand viele Dinge, wie den Phonographen, das erste Gerät das Ton aufnehmen konnte.

Edison hatte auch eine wichtige Rolle bei der Erfindung der Glühbirne und der Filmkamera. Er starb im Jahr 1931.

Madame Doubtfire

Daniel a trois enfants. Son épouse Miranda demande le divorce. Daniel ne peut pas passer du temps avec ses enfants. Il est effondré.

Miranda découvre que Madame Doubtfire et Daniel sont la même personne. Elle est vraiment furieuse.

Daniel présente sa propre émission à la télévision, en tant que Madame Doubtfire. Miranda lui propose de passer plus de temps avec leurs enfants — sans déguisement.

Daniel has three children. His wife Miranda wants a divorce. Daniel can’t spend time with his children. He is devastated.

Miranda decides to hire a housekeeper. Daniel dresses like a woman. His name is Mrs. Doubtfire. Miranda hires Mrs. Doubtfire for the job. Daniel can spend more time with his kids.

Miranda learns that Daniel and Mrs. Doubtfire are the same person. She is very upset.

Daniel has his own television show now, as Mrs. Doubtfire. Miranda tells Daniel she wants him to spend more time with the children—as himself.

Roger Bannister und die 4-Minuten-Meile

Roger Bannister war ein britischer Leichtathlet und Neurologe. Er war der erste Mensch, der eine Meile in weniger als vier Minuten lief.

Bannister wurde 1929 in England geboren. Er war siebzehn, als er seine Laufkarriere am Exeter College in Oxford begann. 

Am 6. Mai 1954 trat Roger Bannister vor dreitausend Zuschauern an der Universität Oxford an. Er lief eine Meile in drei Minuten und neunundfünfzig Sekunden.

Im Jahr 2018 starb Bannister im Alter von 88 Jahren in England.

Bannister was born in England in 1929. He was seventeen when he started his running career at Exeter College in Oxford. 

On May 6, 1954, Roger Bannister competed in front of three thousand spectators at Oxford University. He ran a mile in three minutes and fifty-nine seconds.

In 2018, Bannister died at the age of 88 in England.

1918 La Pandémie de Grippe

La Grippe est due à un virus qui attaque les voies respiratoires.

En 1918, il n’existait aucun médicament ni aucun vaccin pour lutter contre ce virus. La Pandémie de Grippe a débuté en Janvier 1918 et s’est achevée en Décembre 1920.

Le virus de la grippe a infecté environ cinq cent millions de personnes dans le monde entier. Il existe différentes estimations du nombre de décès (entre vingt et cent millions).

Tiger est né en Californie en 1975. Son père lui apprit à jouer au golf. Tiger devint golfeur professionnel à l’âge de vingt-et-un ans.

Das hässliche Entenküken

Ein Entenbaby schlüpft auf einem Bauernhof. Alle um ihn herum denken, dass er hässlich ist. Es verlässt den Bauernhof und lebt den Winter über allein.

Als der Frühling kommt, ist das hässliche Entlein unglücklich. Er sieht einen Schwarm Schwäne und denkt, dass sie ihn töten werden.

Aber die Schwäne heißen ihn willkommen. Er sieht sein Spiegelbild in einem See und erkennt, dass er auch ein schöner Schwan ist.

The Ugly Duckling

A baby duck hatches on a farm. Everyone around him thinks he is ugly. He leaves the farm and during the winter, he lives alone.

When spring comes, the ugly duckling is unhappy. He sees a flock of swans and he thinks that they will kill him.

But the swans welcome him. He sees his reflection in a lake and sees he is a beautiful swan, too.

The ugly duckling was really the child of a swan. His egg accidentally rolled into the nest of a duck, and he grew up to be beautiful.
